Trees and stumps removed at the owner's request, plus farm dams, creek crossings and access tracks. Removing trees or clearing native vegetation can need Council approval, or approval under the Local Land Services Act on rural land, so check before the machine arrives.

Dirt Werks is Luke's business. He quotes each job and runs the machines himself, so the person you explain the job to is the person who digs it. He grew up around machines, started out on trucks and machines for an earthmoving contractor, and spent 14 years in mining before starting Dirt Werks. The three machines work as a set. On a gravel driveway re-sheet, the tipper brings gravel from the quarry and tips it through the tailgate, the posi-track spreads and levels it, then a hired water truck wets it down and Luke's roller compacts it. On a soil removal job, the Kubota loads spoil straight onto the tipper.

What areas do you cover?
Luke is based in Murwillumbah and works the Tweed Valley, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast, Pottsville and Cabarita, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, and Lennox Head and Ballina. The valley around Murwillumbah, Uki and Tyalgum is closest to base. If your block is near the edge of that area, text Luke the suburb and he'll let you know. What machines do you run?
Three, and Luke picks the one that suits the job and the access. The Kubota U55-4 is a 5.5 t class excavator for digging, trenching, stumps and loading. The ASV RT-60 posi-track is a compact track loader that spreads, levels and shapes gravel. The Fuso Fighter tipper carries about 7.5 t a load, spoil out or material in. Can you get a machine through a narrow gate or tight access?
It comes down to the narrowest point on the way in. Measure the gate or side access at its narrowest and take a photo with the tape in shot. Note anything overhead, such as power lines or branches, because Luke keeps at least 3 m clear of overhead power lines. Send that through and he'll tell you whether a machine fits before you book.
Do you cart the spoil away?
Yes. Spoil and site rubbish go out on Luke's own Fuso tipper, and only to lawful tips or approved sites, with dockets. If someone has offered to take your fill, check first: Tweed Shire Council says that in most cases filling land needs development consent. More on soil removal and tipper hire.
