Dirt Werks is run by Luke, and Luke is the operator. He quotes the job, brings the machine and runs it himself, so the person you explain the job to on the phone is the person in the seat on the day. Nobody else is sent out in his place.

Luke grew up around machines: his dad was a machine operator. He started out driving trucks for an earthmoving contractor and worked his way onto the machines, did earthmoving before going into the mining industry for 14 years, then came back to earthmoving. He set up Dirt Werks as his own business in December 2025, based in Murwillumbah in the Tweed Valley.

Luke works from the Gold Coast down through Tweed Heads and Kingscliff to Byron Bay and Lennox Head, and the service areas page lists the suburbs. The rest of this page sets out what you can check before you book: the machines, the training units, the insurance and the ABN.

Three machines, one operator

A 5.5 t excavator to dig, a posi-track to level and spread, and a tipper to take spoil away and bring material in. Luke runs all of it.

The machines, and what gets hired in

The Kubota, the posi-track and the tipper all come with Luke as the operator, so digging, levelling and carting can go on one booking without waiting on someone else's truck. With the laser level he cuts to a set height instead of judging it by eye. More on excavator hire with operator.

Some gear comes in for the job. On a gravel driveway re-sheet, the gravel is tipped through the tailgate and levelled with the posi-track, then a hired water truck wets it and Luke's roller compacts it. Sealing, if you want it, is done by others afterwards on the base Luke has prepared. See gravel driveway repairs for how a re-sheet runs.

Training, by unit code

Luke holds a Statement of Attainment, issued 19 October 2026, for two national units of competency: RIIMPO301E Conduct hydraulic excavator operations and RIIMPO334E Conduct skid steer loader operations using attachments. The first is the excavator unit, for the work he does in the Kubota. You can look up RIIMPO301E and RIIMPO334E on training.gov.au, the National Training Register.

A raised excavator arm or tipper body can reach overhead lines, so Luke keeps at least 3 m clear of them and checks for lines before he tips the truck on level, firm ground. A SafeWork NSW safety alert sets 3 m as the approach distance for mobile plant near energised lines up to 132,000 volts, and 6 m or 8 m for higher voltages, where the risk can't be eliminated.

For builders and site managers

How Luke works on your site

The habits builders ask about, done as standard.

  • Luke lodges his own Before You Dig enquiry, and potholes services by hand before the machine digs close
  • At least 3 m from overhead power lines, and 6 m or 8 m from higher-voltage transmission lines
  • Open holes barricaded, and nobody in the hole while the machine digs
  • Silt fences where runoff could reach drains or creeks
  • Spoil only to lawful tips and approved sites, with dockets
  • Daily pre-start checks on every machine

Statement of Attainment issued 19 October 2026.

Working on a builder's site

On a builder's job, Luke can dig service trenches, drill auger holes, backfill, cart soil out on the tipper and bring road base or gravel in. On house sites he takes on smaller jobs only, such as a short service trench or a load of spoil to go. On trenching he digs and backfills, and the licensed plumber or electrician lays and connects. The builder's offsider is often on site while he works, and because Luke runs the machine himself there's one person to brief. More on trenching and drainage.

Ask for the certificate of currency for his liability and equipment insurance before the job starts. Tell Luke about any private services you know of, such as a power run to a shed or an irrigation line, so he can find them by hand before the machine digs close. Line up the plumber or electrician too, so the trench is open when they arrive and backfilled once they're done.

Questions about Dirt Werks

Who owns Dirt Werks?

Luke, a sole trader based in Murwillumbah NSW. He quotes every job and operates the excavator, posi-track and tipper himself, so the person who quotes is the person who digs. Send the details through the quote form, or call or text 0488 987 325.

How do I know I've found the right Dirt Werks?

Check the phone number and the ABN. Luke's Dirt Werks is the earthmoving business based in Murwillumbah NSW, on 0488 987 325, with the registered business name DIRT WERKS and ABN 58 346 068 875. You can confirm both on ABN Lookup. A listing with a different number or ABN isn't Luke's business.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes and site looks are free. Luke quotes most jobs from your photos, and comes out to look when the job needs it. Call or text 0488 987 325, or use the quote form.

Is Dirt Werks a new business?

Yes. Luke set up Dirt Werks in December 2025, so there are only a couple of Google reviews so far. He isn't new to the work: he grew up around machines, started out on trucks and machines for an earthmoving contractor, and spent 14 years in mining before coming back to earthmoving. Before you book, ask for his certificate of currency, check the ABN on ABN Lookup, and look up his two training units on training.gov.au.

Do you work on farms and rural blocks?

Yes. Rural work includes removing trees and stumps at the owner's request, farm dams, creek crossings, access tracks, and culvert and drainage pipe laid on rural jobs. Clearing native vegetation can need council or Local Land Services approval, so check before you book. See land clearing and rural earthworks, or soil removal and tipper hire for road base and gravel from the quarry.
