Gravel driveways and access tracks

How Luke regrades and re-sheets a gravel driveway

Most gravel driveways fail because of water, so the shape comes before the gravel. On a driveway or track job:

Prep first. Potholes and soft spots are dug out and the surface is reshaped to a crown or crossfall that sheds water, with drains or culverts sorted where they're needed.
Gravel in on the tipper. Road base or gravel comes from the quarry on the Fuso, about 7.5 t a load, tipped through the tailgate on level, firm ground once Luke has checked for overhead lines.
Spread, water, roll. The ASV RT-60 posi-track levels it, a hired water truck wets it down and Luke's roller compacts it.
Bush and farm tracks are cut and graded with the posi-track, and road base comes in on the tipper.
Sealing is done by others. If the drive is getting bitumen or asphalt, Luke prepares the base for the sealing contractor. More on gravel driveway repairs and how to regrade a gravel driveway.

How Luke digs a trench

Trenches for drainage, plumbing and power, and big pipe on rural jobs:

Services found first. Luke checks the Before You Dig plans and potholes by hand before the machine digs close to any service.
Dug with the Kubota. The 5.5 t excavator cuts the trench with a narrow bucket, and the spoil is heaped alongside for backfill or loaded onto the tipper.
Plumbing and power. Luke digs and backfills, and your licensed plumber or electrician lays and connects.
Culverts and large drainage pipe on rural jobs: Luke lays the pipe himself and backfills over it.
Safe while it's open. Open trenches are barricaded, and nobody is in the trench while the machine digs. More on trenching and drainage.

Farm dams and creek crossings

Rural earthworks: dams, crossings and tracks

On farms, acreage and bush blocks:

Farm dams dug with the Kubota, plus the tracks to reach them.
Creek crossings: approach ramps cut down to the creek, the bed dug out and the culvert pipe laid, and gravel spread on the approaches so a ute or tractor can get across.
Silt fences go in where runoff could reach a drain or creek.
Approvals first. If a crossing or dam needs an approval, have it in place before the machines arrive, and Luke builds to it. The land clearing and rural earthworks page covers the NSW water rules.

Clearing scrub and taking out stumps

Trees and stumps come out at your request. Mark the ones staying before work starts.
Stumps are dug out with the bucket, root ball and all, and logs and scrub are moved with the grab.
Carted away on the Fuso to lawful tips or approved sites, with dockets. If you want to keep any timber, say so when you send photos. See soil and rubbish removal.
Clear of power lines. Luke keeps the machines at least 3 m from overhead power lines.
Tree rules vary by council. The land clearing page sets out what Tweed, Byron and Ballina shires ask for.

What each machine does on a job

Kubota U55-4 excavator: 5.5 t class, 2020, with an air-con cab, a lifting point and a load chart. It digs, trenches, clears and loads, with buckets, an auger, a grab and a compaction wheel.
ASV RT-60 posi-track: a compact track loader that levels, spreads and grades.
Fuso Fighter tipper: about 7.5 t a load, carting spoil out and bringing gravel, road base and soil in from the quarry.
Laser level for cutting ground to a set height.
Hired with an operator. The excavator, posi-track and tipper are hired with Luke running them: see excavator, posi-track and tipper hire.
