Soil removal and tipper hire, with Luke driving

Dirt Werks runs a Fuso Fighter tipper with about 7.5 tonnes of payload, and Luke drives it himself. It takes the loads a ute and trailer can't: spoil from trenching, driveway and clearing work, yard and block clean-ups, green waste, and the rubbish left at the end of a job. The same truck brings gravel, road base and soil in from the quarry.

Luke also runs a Kubota U55-4 excavator and an ASV RT-60 posi-track, so nobody shovels anything onto the truck. He loads with whichever machine suits the access, carts the load away and comes back for the next. That is the difference from renting a truck: the driver and the machine that loads it come on the same booking.

Luke is based in Murwillumbah and runs the tipper across the Tweed Valley, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast, Pottsville and Cabarita, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, and Lennox Head and Ballina. The material, the number of loads and the distance to a site that will take it all shape the quote.

Fibro or asbestos: work stops

Dirt Werks doesn't remove asbestos. If fibro, broken sheeting or anything else that might contain asbestos turns up in a pile or a dig, work stops and a licensed asbestos removalist is needed. Mention any old sheds, sheeting or buried rubbish when you ask for a quote.

Gravel, road base and soil delivered from the quarry

Luke collects gravel, road base or soil from the quarry on his own tipper. For a straight drop, he tips on level, firm ground after checking for overhead lines, as close to the spot as the truck can safely go. If it needs spreading, it goes out through the tailgate and the posi-track levels it, so nobody barrows road base up the drive.

A gravel driveway re-sheet runs the same way: the old surface is prepped, new gravel is tipped and levelled, then watered with a hired water truck and compacted with Luke's roller. Sealing, if you want it, is done by others afterwards. See gravel driveway repairs or the guide to regrading a gravel driveway.

Where your soil and rubbish go

Every load goes to a lawful tip or an approved site, with a docket. Clean-looking soil isn't always clean in the legal sense. Under the NSW definition, virgin excavated natural material (VENM) can't contain sulfidic ores or soils or any other waste. Dug soil can't be classed as VENM if the Acid Sulfate Soil Risk Maps show any probability of acid sulfate soils at the site, unless it has been chemically assessed under the Acid Sulfate Soils Assessment Guidelines and has no detectable reduced inorganic sulfur above the laboratory limit of reporting (NSW EPA). Tweed Shire Council notes acid sulfate soils are common along the Tweed Coast.

Receiving fill has rules too. Tweed Shire Council and Ballina Shire Council both say that in most cases filling land requires development consent, so check with council before fill comes onto your block. The council approval guide covers the common questions.

Tip fees are part of what any removal job costs, and each council sets its own fees and rules. Ballina's Resource Recovery Centre lists soil loads over 5 tonnes as needing pre-approval in its 2026/27 fees, and a full Fuso load is about 7.5 tonnes. In Byron Shire, the tip is the Resource Recovery Centre at 115 The Manse Road, Myocum. Any spoil that can stay on site within your approvals is one less load to cart and tip.

Fire ants: moving soil, mulch and machines

Red imported fire ants have been detected in the Tweed. As at Biosecurity (Fire Ant) Emergency Order (No. 10) 2026, published 1 September 2026, the Murwillumbah and Wardell (Ballina Shire) movement control areas remained in place, and the NSW infested area included land within 5 km of detections at Tweed Heads South. Moving soil, mulch, turf, quarry materials or earth-moving equipment out of any of these areas is restricted. Check the current DPIRD zone map before anything moves, and report suspected fire ants to the Biosecurity Helpline on 1800 680 244.

What to send Luke for a tipper quote

Text a few photos and a line or two covering:

  • The material: soil, clay, rock, green waste, rubbish or a mix
  • Roughly how much: the pile size, or the length, width and depth
  • The gate, and where the truck can park and tip
  • Overhead power lines, soft ground or slopes near the spot
  • Any old fibro, sheeting or buried rubbish

How it works

From a photo to a finished job

  1. Call or text Luke a photo

A wide shot, the gate or access, and the exact spot tells him most of what he needs.

  2. Get a free quote

From your photos, or from a quick site look if the job needs it. No charge for either.

  3. Book a day

Luke brings the right machine for the access and the job.

  4. Dig, cart and clean up

Spoil goes out on his own tipper. The site is left tidy.

Got a pile to shift or a load to bring in?

Text Luke a photo of the pile or the spot with the gate in shot, and say what the material is. He'll work out how many loads and where they go.

Soil removal and tipper hire questions

How much fits in the tipper?

About 7.5 tonnes a load. How many cubic metres that is depends on the material: wet clay and rock weigh more than dry topsoil, and dug soil bulks up, taking more room on the truck than it did in the ground. Send the pile size, or the length, width and depth of the area, and Luke will work out the loads.

Can you deliver and spread gravel or road base?

Yes. Luke picks up gravel, road base or soil from the quarry on the tipper and either drops it in one spot or spreads it through the tailgate and levels it with the posi-track. Mark where you want it and tell him about the gate, soft ground and any overhead lines, because the truck only tips on level, firm ground clear of lines.

Do you take green waste?

Yes. Branches, scrub and stumps from clearing or a yard clean-up go on the tipper, loaded with the grab or bucket, to a site that accepts green waste. If your property is inside a fire ant zone, check the current NSW DPIRD rules before anything leaves, because soil and organic mulch are listed fire ant carriers.

What can't you take?

Nothing that might contain asbestos. Fibro, broken sheeting or suspect rubbish stays put until a licensed asbestos removalist has dealt with it. Every other load has to suit the tip or approved site it goes to, and each one is docketed. If you're not sure what is in a pile, say so when you send your photos.
