Earthmoving across the Tweed and Northern Rivers

Dirt Werks is Luke's earthmoving business, based in Murwillumbah. He works across the Tweed Valley, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast, Pottsville and Cabarita, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, and Lennox Head and Ballina. Luke has over 10 years operating machinery, and because he runs the machines himself, the person who quotes your job is the one who does it. On builders' jobs, the builder's offsider is often on site with him.

The three machines work as a set. The Kubota U55-4 excavator digs and loads, the Fuso Fighter tipper carts spoil out and brings gravel, road base or soil in, and the ASV RT-60 posi-track levels and spreads. Luke runs one machine at a time, but because all three are his, you don't have to line up a separate truck or contractor for each stage. There are job photos on the projects page.

Excavator, posi-track and tipper hire with operator

Wet hire, which means the machine comes with Luke as the operator. Book the 5.5 t Kubota U55-4 excavator, the ASV RT-60 posi-track or the Fuso tipper on its own, or all three as a combo. The excavator has an air-con cab, a lifting point and a load chart, and Luke brings buckets, an auger, a grab or a compaction wheel to suit the work. Suits farmers, builders and rural landholders with a list of jobs to get through.

Gravel driveway repairs and re-sheets

Gravel driveways and rural access tracks that have potholed, washed out or worn down to dirt. Luke preps the base, tips fresh gravel through the tailgate of his tipper and levels it with the posi-track. A hired water truck wets it down and Luke's roller compacts it, so the gravel packs down firm instead of sitting loose.

Trenching for plumbing, electrical and drainage

Trenches for plumbing, electrical and drainage lines, dug with the Kubota. Luke digs and backfills, and your licensed plumber or electrician lays and connects. On rural jobs he lays culvert and drainage pipe himself, including farm ag drains. Before digging near services he checks the Before You Dig plans and potholes by hand to find them, and nobody goes in the trench while the machine is digging.

Land clearing and rural earthworks

Trees and stumps taken out at the owner's request, thick scrub cleared, and the farm jobs that need a machine: dams, creek crossings and access tracks. The Kubota digs stumps out root ball and all, the posi-track shapes and tidies the ground after, and the tipper takes away the spoil and rubbish. Silt fences go in where runoff could reach drains or creeks.

Soil removal, rubbish removal and tipper work

Spoil, soil and rubbish loaded with the excavator and carted away on Luke's Fuso Fighter tipper. It goes only to lawful tips or approved sites, with dockets. The same truck brings gravel, road base and soil in from the quarry, so a dig-out and a delivery can often be done on one booking.

Smaller jobs Luke takes on

Alongside the main services, Luke also does:

Auger holes for fence posts, farm sheds and other rural structures.
Tank installs on farms and rural blocks, with the excavator for the dig and the tipper for any spoil that has to go.
Gravel, road base and soil delivery from the quarry on the Fuso, tipped on level, firm ground once Luke has checked for overhead lines.
Small residential jobs, such as a short trench ready for the plumber, a load of soil taken away or a rough patch of driveway fixed.

Who does what on the job

Luke sticks to the earthworks. Here's where other people come in:

Plumbing and electrical: Luke digs the trench and backfills it. Your licensed plumber or electrician lays the pipe or cable and makes the connections.
Sealing and asphalt: done by others. Luke prepares the gravel base so it's ready for them.
Tree and clearing approvals: Tweed, Byron and Ballina councils can require a permit before some trees on private land come out, and on rural land, clearing native vegetation may need approval under the Local Land Services Act. Check what applies to your block before booking. The council approval guide is a good place to start.
