Tell Luke about the job

Your name, phone number, suburb and the type of job are all Luke needs. Everything else is optional, and photos help him quote without a site visit.

Your details are used only to quote your job. Privacy policy. Prefer to talk? Call 0488 987 325 or text a photo.

    What to send Luke

A few photos and a few lines cover most jobs. The more Luke can see, the fewer questions he has to ask before he quotes.

    • A wide shot of the whole area, taken from where a machine would come in, so Luke can see the slope and what sits around the job.
    • The access or gate: measure the narrowest point and put the tape in the photo. That tells Luke which machine fits and where the tipper can get to.
    • The exact spot: where the trench runs, the stump sits or the driveway has washed out. A person or a tape measure in shot shows the scale.
    • Rough size or depth: the length and width of the area, how deep the trench needs to go, or how many metres of driveway. Paced-out numbers are fine.
    • The suburb or town the job is in. If you're not sure Luke covers it, text him the suburb and ask.
    • Timing: when you'd like it done, and anything it has to fit around, such as a plumber or electrician booked to lay pipe or cable.
    • What's overhead or underground: power lines, trees, tanks, septic, and any pipes or cables you know about. Luke keeps at least 3 m clear of overhead power lines.
    • Spoil and material: whether soil or rubbish needs carting away, or gravel, road base or soil needs bringing in on the tipper.

What happens after you send it

Luke reads your details and photos himself, and calls or texts if he needs to know more. Once you're happy with the quote, you book a day. He brings the machine that suits the access and the job, and any spoil goes out on his own tipper.

    Questions about getting a quote

    Can Luke quote from photos?

Yes, where the photos show enough. Clear shots with a tape measure in them, plus rough sizes and the suburb, let Luke work out which machine fits and how many tipper loads the job needs. If something can't be judged from photos, such as how firm the ground is or how steep the slope really is, he'll arrange a quick look on site before he quotes. You can text more photos to 0488 987 325 at any time, even after you've sent the form.

What affects the price of an earthworks quote?

Mostly four things. Access, because it decides which machine fits and how easily it can work. The size and depth of the dig, and what the ground is like. How many tipper loads go out as spoil or come in as gravel, road base or soil, with the Fuso carrying about 7.5 t a load. And how far your block is from the tip or quarry. Photos and rough measurements let Luke allow for each one.

    I'm a builder. What should I send?

A plan or sketch showing where the trench runs or what needs carting away, the depths you need, photos of the access, and when the other trades are booked. For trenching, Luke digs and backfills, and the licensed plumber or electrician lays and connects. Your offsider is often on site with Luke, so add their name and number. The form only takes photos, so email plans to dirtwerks@hotmail.com. Luke's certificate of currency for liability and equipment insurance is available on request.

Is there anything to sort out before Luke digs?

Two things are worth checking early. Underground services: Luke lodges his own Before You Dig Australia enquiry for the job and potholes by hand before digging close to services. Approvals: building, repairing or changing a driveway crossing on the verge needs section 138 approval from the roads authority, usually the council, before work starts. Tweed Shire Council says that in most cases filling land needs development consent. The council approval guide has more.
